Description
The Bugle conservation & wildlife editor works closely with the editorial team and is responsible for delivering engaging, quality content about RMEF's conservation, habitat, lands and wildlife management work for Bugle magazine and RMEF's other communication platforms. Additionally, specific focus to be applied to wildlife conservation, elk management, natural history and other topics to further RMEF's mission. The conservation & wildlife editor will also work with designers, writers, RMEF volunteers, interns and those from other RMEF departments, with a goal of generating quality content to further RMEF's mission.
Essential Functions: - Conceive, write, assign and edit features and departments and other content for Bugle and digital media platforms that highlight RMEF's lands and conservation accomplishments, explore conservation issues relevant to the RMEF's mission and how these issues relate to elk management and hunting, and celebrate the natural history of elk and other wildlife.
- Work closely with the senior editor and director of communication to ensure cohesive storytelling.
- Work cross-functionally with department leads to prioritize storytelling of RMEF's mission work.
- Maintain a well-balanced slates of conservation content for at least three and preferably six issues of Bugle.
- Cultivate contacts with and solicit story ideas from RMEF volunteers and staff, land and wildlife experts, and freelance writers and decide why, how, when and by whom each conservation-based article should be written.
- Write and/or assign projects to writers, editors, interns and others and ensure they keep focus, progress smoothly, use resources efficiently and frugally, are high-quality and meet established deadlines.
- Perform primary edit on conservation, elk management and natural history stories.
- Perform general edits on other editors' content.
- Perform comprehensive research to glean information for articles, coordinating with wildlife and land professionals from nonprofit groups, universities, state, federal and tribal agencies and other sources to best represent RMEF positions and work. Hone knowledge of elk ecology and management. Stay abreast of natural resource issues, political sensitivities and other timely issues.
- Work with Bugle interns to ensure their success in producing quality content.
- Other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree and/or experience and proven ability in journalism, creative writing or related field. Strong emphasis on natural sciences is helpful. Must have at least three years' experience as editor of a magazine devoted to wildlife conservation or natural history and experience with the creation of digital media content.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: - Thorough knowledge of and belief in RMEF's mission, goals and policies; including the biological, sociological and political elements that shape them.
- Excellent written and verbal skills.
- Ability to hear, accentuate and clarify a writer's voice, proficiency in style and grammar.
- Firm understanding of what proficient writing is; ability to detect and correct problems.
- Extensive knowledge of wildlife/wildlands conservation.
- Able to handle multiple projects simultaneously, manage priorities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to set and fulfill short- and long-term goals and priorities; absolute ability to meet deadlines.
- Strong interviewing skills (able to establish good rapport with diverse individuals, eliciting profound, clear and thorough information).
- Knowledge of and personal involvement in natural resource conservation is highly valued.
- Must demonstrate a personal interest in/commitment to hunting.
- Must show excellent computer skills including various key software and programs.
- Strong detail orientation and knowledge of grammar and copy editing.
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering a positive team environment.
Physical Demands: Must sit for extended periods of time; use a computer terminal extensively; reach forward and to the side, bend from both standing and sitting position. Some travel is required and may include plane, car, horse and foot.
