What You Will Do

Sigma-DO is seeking outstanding candidates for the position of Deputy Division Leader (DDL). The Deputy Division Leader works with the Division Leader (DL) in sharing responsibility for the scientific and engineering leadership and administration of the Division's projects, facilities and staff. As a member of the Division's management team, the DDL helps formulate the Division's strategic directions and works closely with the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Physical Sciences (ALDPS) management team and across directorate boundaries.

The Sigma DDL will work in partnership with the Sigma DL to increase the value and visibility of Sigma Division's materials science research to national programs as measured by technical reputation, innovation, and delivery of successful projects. S/he will be responsible for creating an intellectual and professional workplace environment that promotes scientific and engineering excellence and that attracts and retains a diverse staff of the highest scientific caliber. The DDL will support collaborations with other laboratories, universities, and industrial partners. The DL and DDL will together ensure that all applicable safety, security, environmental, and administrative policies and procedures are appropriately implemented.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated scientific or technical leadership in an area of science, technology or engineering.
  • Demonstrated expert-level knowledge and experience in management and administration of high output scientific research and development organizations which require stringent environmental, safety, and health standards. This includes radioactive, hazardous and toxic metals and ceramics.
  • Demonstrated expert-level knowledge, capability, and experience in leadership of a science/engineering organization, including success in program development, program advocacy, strategic planning, resource planning and allocation, technical program execution, and negotiation.
  • Demonstrated expert-level application of sound business practices and the promoting of objectives in such areas as identifying strategic opportunities and developing agreements to fund new initiatives.
  • Demonstrated success in leadership as evidenced by strategic planning, the resolution of programmatic conflicts, providing scientific advocacy, the effective management of personnel and resources, and the achievement of goals of significant impact, complexity, or size.
  • Demonstrated record of developing and fostering successful cross-organizational teams to solve complex problems, as well as the ability to motivate others to identify and successfully address technical challenges.
  • Demonstrated expert-level interpersonal skills, which include the ability to establish trust, engage in technical conversations with all levels of staff, discuss program strategies with current and potential funding agencies, delegate tasks to staff and administrators, and interact with all levels of Laboratory management.
  • Capacity to meet schedule and deliverables for multiple concurrent projects with a range of priorities.
  • Demonstrated excellence in verbal, written, and visual communication, as evidenced by talks, articles, and presentations.
  • Proven experience in attracting, mentoring, developing, and retaining talented people into a technical organization, including a commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Education/Experience: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in materials science, physics, materials chemistry, engineering, or a related discipline from an accredited institution and 12 years related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Ph.D. is preferred.


Desired Qualifications:
  • Broad familiarity with the state of science and engineering within the Division including how these activities are relevant across the Laboratory, DOE, other government agencies, academia, and the private sector.
  • Demonstrated experience in building collaborative partnerships across LANL internal organizations and a demonstrated success in developing and sustaining programs that attract support from the Nuclear Weapons Programs, Global Security Programs, NNSA, DOE, LDRD, DoD, or private industry.
  • Experience in interactions between national laboratories, universities and/or private industry.
  • Demonstrated experience with manufacturing practices applicable to the US nuclear weapons stockpile.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing science principles and practices.
  • Experience interacting with and presenting to upper executive level management.
  • Experience with federal government program review processes and deliverables.

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Directive 206.2- Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.


Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.


*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include ongoing drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.


New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.


Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.


Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
