Western Colorado University invites applications for either a Lecturer faculty position or a tenure-track Assistant Professor faculty position of Educational Administration and Leadership. We are particularly interested in candidates who have demonstrated expertise in (a) K-12 educational leadership/educational administration, (b) teaching online graduate principal and school administrator preparation courses, and (c) designing online principal and school administrator preparation courses. The successful candidate will teach a 5/5 load (Lecturer) or 4/4 load (tenure-track Assistant Professor), with possible course reassigned time for program coordination. Most coursework in the Department is delivered asynchronously online via Canvas; however, this position is in-person on-campus.

The Education Department at Western has approximately 70 on-campus undergraduates and 200 online graduate students. Students have the opportunity to earn undergraduate and graduate degrees, teaching and principal licenses, and added endorsements in elementary education, K-12 or secondary education, special education, and school administration contexts. RESPONSIBILITIES:

INSTRUCTION (Required for Lecturer & Tenure-track Assistant Professor)
  • Teach courses based on expertise and department need
  • Coach/supervise graduate pre- and in-service educators
  • Develop curricula in collaboration with other members of the department
UNIVERSITY SERVICE (Required for Lecturer & Tenure-track Assistant Professor)
  • Contribute to intradepartmental distributed leadership such as work involved in CDE reauthorization, student recruitment at partner school districts, etc.
  • Contribute to University service obligations, inclusive of shared governance and committee service
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITY (Required for Tenure-track Assistant Professor)
  • Attend and present research at regional, state, and inter/national conferences
  • Engage in official capacities within professional or scholarly associations/organizations

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

For Tenure-track Assistant Professor
  • EdD or PhD in Educational Administration and Leadership or a closely related discipline; ABD applicants will be considered with completion of dissertation by start date
  • At least three years of successful K-12 school or district leadership experience in the U.S. e.g., as Principal, Assistant Principal, Curriculum & Instruction Director or Specialist, Data Coach, Superintendent, etc.
  • Evidence of professional activity* related to the field of education, including but not limited to, peer-reviewed scholarly publications, conference presentations, grant writing, and/or research-in-progress to fulfill the expectations associated with a tenure-track appointment

*Per the Handbook for Professional Personnel, "Professional activity should be directed toward improving classroom teaching, involving students in research and scholarly activity, or enhancing the reputation of the University".

For Lecturer
  • MA or MS in Educational Administration and Leadership or a closely related discipline
  • At least two years of successful K-12 teaching and three years of successful K-12 school or district leadership experience in the U.S. e.g., as Principal, Assistant Principal, Curriculum & Instruction Director or Specialist, Data Coach, Superintendent, etc.

For Lecturer & Tenure-track Assistant Professor
  • Experience mentoring/coaching pre-service and/or in-service principals
  • Familiarity with principal preparation standards (National, Colorado, or from other states)
  • Experience teaching online, providing consistent student feedback and communication
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with various education stakeholders, including K-12 educators, school and district leaders, coaches/mentors, and state departments of education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice and educational equity in schools

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to create effective higher education courses in online asynchronous environments
  • Demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement through data collection and analysis for purposes of 1. course, program, and/or university evaluation and 2. implementation of policies and/or programs designed to improve student learning and educational outcomes
  • Record of being professionally flexible and responsive
  • Record of establishing and maintaining organizational partnerships with education stakeholders at the local and state level
  • Regular engagement with professional development and regional/state/national/international professional or scholarly associations
  • Experience as a school superintendent

SALARY/BENEFITS: $53,000 annualized salary (Lecturer) or $60,000 annualized salary (Tenure-track Assistant Professor). These positions are eligible for a distributed leadership stipend for up to $13,905 depending on additional year-round service assignments.

Western offers an excellent benefits package including shared premiums for a comprehensive health insurance plan, dental insurance, retirement plan, life insurance, and other insurance options. After one year of employment, Western provides free tuition for dependents enrolled full-time in undergraduate programs for up to four years.
