Job Description

Sherith Israel is a historic landmark synagogue with leaders who continue to inspire generations of members and the greater Jewish community. We are a Reform congregation of approximately 450 households that strives to create a meaningful modern Jewish life that is warm, inclusive, and rooted in tradition. Our dedicated lay leadership team collaborates with clergy and staff in creating a sense of belonging, meaning, and purpose.

OVERVIEW  

We are seeking a strategic and creative leader with sound judgment, strong interpersonal skills, and efficient management expertise to oversee operations, financial management, fundraising programs, marketing and communications. Working closely with our clergy and committed lay leaders, t he new executive director will drive strategic planning, foster team development, promote an inclusive and welcoming culture, and cultivate strong stakeholder relationships .

RESPONSIBILITIES

ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP  

  • Partner with the clergy and board to define, articulate, and continue to build Sherith Israel’s mission, vision, and strategic objectives. 
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, creative problem-solving, and excellence among clergy, lay leaders, and staff. 
  • Develop relationships with local and national organizations. 

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT & DEVELOPMENT

  • Collaborate with the treasurer and budget & finance committee to: 
  • Maintain sound financial management systems and controls for legal compliance, integrity, and transparency. 
  • Update and manage the budget for the synagogue and preschool.
  • Oversee all financial operations, including supervision of accounting staff, accounting firm, and outside investment manager.
  • Support fundraising and donor engagement.
  • Foster a culture of philanthropy.

COMMUNITY & COMMUNICATIONS 

  • Reinforce our core goal in creating a sense of belonging, meaning, and purpose for modern Jewish life.
  • Mentor and oversee staff to expand and deepen member engagement and recruitment. 
  • Oversee and improve upon our marketing efficacy including email communication, website, social media presence, advertising, and print materials.
  • Work with marketing consultant to ensure effective external and internal presence. 

OPERATIONS & FACILITIES  

  • Manage staff in daily operations; set priorities, track projects, create a culture of and process for reflection/improvement, and maintain synagogue security. Ensure that staff are prepared and in place to support all programming with extra focus on large-scale events like High Holy Day services.
  • Oversee and improve upon our facility rental program.
  • Oversee property management, including renovations and upgrades. 
  • Work with the preschool director to grow enrollment and ensure compliance with licensing requirements. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree. Master’s degree in a related field is a plus. 
  • Minimum of five years of leadership and management experience including team-building and mentorship. 
  • Experience with a membership-based non-profit as an employee, lay leader or volunteer is preferred. Involvement in preschool oversight is a plus.
  • Knowledge of financial/budgeting practices. Experience with supervising and supporting fundraising programs is a plus. 
  • Superior project management and communication skills. 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and CRM systems. Experience with ShulCloud is preferred. 
  • Ability to handle sensitive matters with professionalism.

 

This full-time, on-site position reports to the board president. Hours include some Jewish holidays, weekends, and evenings.

Compensation & Benefits include:

$150,000 - $170,000 (depending on experience)
